My nieces came to visit last weekend and I wanted to do something fun with them.  I decided that we could make home made donuts together for breakfast.  The recipe was very easy.  I just used Pillsbury Grands Jr. Biscuits, cut holes in the dough and fried them in oil. You can use any brand of refrigerated buttermilk biscuit dough.

Sasha was hard at work cutting holes into the donuts.  We only had one donut hole cutter so I kept Sydney busy with drawing.

Finally Sydney was able to cut her donut holes.

I fried both the donuts and donut holes. Just fry until golden brown on both sides. Drain briefly on wire racks placed over baking sheets. My parents didn’t have a wire rack so I just drained them on paper towels.

We used Duncan Hines Amazing Glazes, confectioner sugar and cinnamon sugar as toppings.  Here is a coupon for $1.00 off the Duncan Hines Glaze, if you would like to try them out.

Instead of placing the confectioners’ sugar and cinnamon sugar in a bowl and rolling the hot donuts, I put the hot donuts in containers and had the girls shake to cover the donuts.  This was another way the girls could still participate and not get messy.

The girls had a lot of fun helping. They were able to do everything but the frying.  I told them that was the grown up part.

The donuts turned out delicious.  The powdered donut tasted just like a New Orleans beignet. My favorite was the vanilla glazed donut.  Sasha and Sydney couldn’t wait to show their parents and grandparents what they made.  The whole family ate and enjoyed them.  Even my mother, who doesn’t have a sweet tooth, liked them.  The girls were so proud of themselves.

Here is Sydney trying to sneak another one after her daddy told her she couldn’t have any more.  She is my twin.  We both have a sweet tooth.

This is a quick and easy recipe to make for your family.  They will savor the memory forever.
